  • In Memoriam of W. Robert Alderson Jr.
    Monday, June 8, 2020

With broken hearts, TLA is sad to announce the passing of W. Robert "Bob" Alderson Jr., 80, of Topeka, Kansas.  Bob passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020, from a cerebral hemorrhage.  Bob was a mentor to many and a friend to all during his career.  Bob served as President of the TLA during the 1999-2000 term, and he held an extremely successful annual meeting at Hilton Head, South Carolina.  Bob continued his involvement after his term as President with TLA; often being selected to be a Voting Past President.

Bob married Ruth (Hoagland) Alderson in Prairie Village, Kansas, on November 13, 1971. She often attended TLA functions; including the Chicago Regional last January.  Ruth  survives as does his two daughters, B.J. Mays and her husband Brian, and Stephanie Switzky and her husband Drew and two granddaughters, Brynna and Brooklyn Mays all of Topeka; three brothers, Alan Alderson and wife Gail of Topeka, Rusty Alderson and wife Berna of Cedar Park, TX, Ross Reninger of Roeland Park, KS, step-mom Peggy Alderson of Overland Park, KS and his devoted dogs, Abby and Zeva.

Bob was a devoted fan of the University of Kansas Jayhawks; especially the highly successful basketball team.  He also was a loyal Kansas City Royals baseball fan.  The traffic directors at his visitation are wearing the uniforms of those teams in Bob's honor at his visitation.  Bob also was an avid golfer and always played at the TLA annual conferences.  Most of all Bob was a great friend to the organization and to its members.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the First Christian Church of Topeka, Disciples Center at Camp Tawakoni or to the Topeka Jazz Workshop and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.

Bob will live forever in our hearts and memories.  Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!

  • TLA COVID-19 Pandemic Photo Contest -- Remembering the Quarantine
    Tuesday, April 14, 2020

    Dear TLA Members,

I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy during the Spring of 2020.  We have all felt the loss of our Annual Conference.  We will miss the education program and the camaraderie that occurs each year with the renewal of old acquaintances and the formation of new friendships.  We will miss the fun dining and cultural experiences and, of course, the formal and informal gatherings that accompany the conference. However, despite the cancellation of the Annual Conference, life and the practice of law continue and we are all dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic in our own unique and hopefully sane but zany ways.

This year the July TTL will not be able to include photographs from the Annual Conference.  Accordingly, TLA is sending a call out to all members for a "TLA COVID-19 Pandemic Photo Contest" to document and remember this moment in the life of the TLA.  TLA is requesting that you send any and all defining quarantine photos, preferably photos featuring current TLA members both touching and fun, to be reviewed and considered for publication in the July TTL. We ask that these photos be sent directly to my email address.  We will need them to be submitted prior to May 7th. As many photos as possible will be included in the July issue of The Transportation Lawyer.

Thank you for your continued support of TLA and send in those photos!

    Wishing you all the best,

    Chris Kelly

  • TLA Update During COVID-19 Pandemic
    Wednesday, April 8, 2020

The Executive Committee members want to extend their warm wishes to all TLA members and hope that you are remaining healthy and keeping safe during these uncertain times.  TLA continues to move forward, business as usual, even though the Annual Conference was cancelled for 2020.  The TLA Business Meeting will take place virtually on April 30th.  This Business Meeting is important as it provides an orderly election of the new leadership for the 2020-2021 year.  It will also provide the TLA membership an update on current TLA business and upcoming events.

Staff is available to assist members in any way needed. Refunds are being processed for those that had registered for the Annual Conference and they appreciate your patience as staff works through the refunds.

Looking to get involved?  Want to join a committee?  Send an email Collin at chamman@kellencompany.com to be added to a committee.  The Membership and Recruitment committee is also looking for assistance to keep TLA going strong into the upcoming year, including support for the Transportation Law Institute (TLI), Chicago Regional Seminar and Boot Camp and the 2021 Annual Conference in Squaw Creek.

Not a member?  Contact Fritz Damm (fdamm@scopelitis.com) or Patrick Foppe (pfoppe@lashlybaer.com) to get more information on membership.  Membership benefits include five issues of The Transportation Lawyer, listing in the membership directory, member rates for the TLI, Chicago Regional Conference, and the Annual Conference, involvement on committees and member-only access to additional resources on the website.

Keep safe and the Executive Committee looks forward to seeing you at a future event!

  • In Memoriam of David B. Schneider
    Thursday, February 27, 2020

It is with tremendous sadness that the TLA informs you of the loss of our dear friend and brother, David Bernard Schneider, who passed away on February 9, 2020 surrounded by family and loved ones.  David was born on March 9, 1944 in Galveston, Texas to Gertrude and Morris Schneider. After graduating high school in Texas City, he attended the University of Texas where he received a BS in Business Administration in 1966, followed by a JD from the University of Texas School of Law in 1969. While at U.T., he met the love of his life, Ronnie Jean Gottlieb Schneider, to whom he was married for over 30 years before her passing in 1999. After leaving Austin, David moved to Washington DC where he worked for the Interstate Commerce Commission and then moved to Kansas City where he was counsel for Yellow Freight. In 1978, David relocated to Oklahoma City where he established himself as a leading attorney serving the transportation industry and practiced for over 40 years.

David was very active in professional and local charitable organizations throughout his life. He was a past President of the Transportation Lawyers Association from 1996-1997, a Distinguished Service Award Recipient in 1999, and a Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient in 2010.  David also received the well-deserved TLA Bullshippers' Award in 2000, which he cherished greatly. David was also an active board member for the Jewish Federation of Oklahoma City, St. Anthony's Hospital Foundation, Temple B'nai Israel, and Emanuel Synagogue.

David embraced life with an unwavering confidence, humor, and occasional irreverence, demonstrated in part by how he set up office outside of TLA meeting rooms and held court. He will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to Jewish values, passion for burnt orange Texas-inspired garb (including shirts, sweaters, cuff links and ties), his unique dancing skills, and generosity beyond his means. Most of all he was resilient. His life was occasionally filled with obstacles and challenges, but he always seemed to adapt and flourish with change. After Ronnie's death in 1999, he found himself amidst a community supported not only by old friends, but he found ways to move forward and establish new friendships and loving relationships which brought him incredible joy in life.

David is survived by his children, Jerome and Michelle, and his five loving grandchildren - Rowan, Hayden, Trey, Icelie, and Abby - all of whom had a very special place in his heart.  If you are so inclined, please make donations in David's memory to the Jewish Federation of Oklahoma City.  TLA extends its deepest sympathies to Jerome, Michelle and David's grandchildren, and well as his friends of which there were many.  May he rest in peace until we meet again to enjoy another cigar and story with him.

  • TLA Social Media Presence Start-Up.
    Thursday, January 2, 2020

At the July 2019 TLA Executive Committee meeting, an ad hoc group was formed to consider how best to increase TLA's presence on social media.  TLA has already developed a policy on the appropriate use of social media.  (See attached PDF). The group included Hans Huggler, Chris Kelly, and Pierre-Olivier Dumas along with representatives from Kellen. The ad hoc group considered the benefits and challenges to TLA becoming active on various social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).  The group determined that LinkedIn is the most visible platform for professionals and networking, requires less "interaction" management (unlike Twitter or Facebook), and TLA members and recruiting targets are already well-represented on the site and accustomed to engaging in professional communications on the platform.  Therefore, the ad hoc group recommended that TLA initially focus its social media strategy on developing its presence on LinkedIn. This recommendation was adopted by the Executive Committee at its November meeting.

There is in existence on LinkedIn a current group page for TLA that members can like.  TLA is setting up an organization-specific profile on LinkedIn which will independently post content and to which members can affiliate themselves.  We will be asking members to migrate over to the new organization page as the current group page will be closed down after a time of overlap between the 2 pages.  We will have public-facing content.  TLA will post "teaser" content from TTL on LinkedIn on a regular schedule.  Ideally, each "teaser" would include a short blurb summarizing the article's topic and author (linking to the author on LinkedIn if possible).  The post would also link to a digital copy of the TTL article housed on the TLA website, however, only the first two to three paragraphs would be available to the public.  To access the full content, a member of the public would be prompted to join TLA.

The LinkedIn TLA profile and page will be a tool for questions as well as possible referrals.  However, we ask that all members comply with the social media policy adopted by the EC and linked herein.
